New designation will see Registered Psychiatric Nurses practice in N.S.

The provincial government says amendments to nursing regulations will allow Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs) to practice in Nova Scotia.

The amendments will enable registration and licensing while establishing the scope of care for RPNs. The nurses will be regulated by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing.

“This is about expanding the roles that can support mental healthcare for Nova Scotians, and we’re proud to support our partners to bring registered psychiatric nurses into our healthcare system,” said Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness. “Moving forward, these nurses will be recognized for their unique skills and supported to work to their full scope of practice so they can make the intended impact.”

The government says nine other provinces and territories regulate or are in the process of regulating RPNs. The nurses have specialized education and training that prepare them to work in several mental health and addiction settings with diverse people.

It’s expected Nova Scotia Health will begin recruiting for the position in January.
