Fire and search and rescue crews are nearing the completion of a rescue effort to save two people who were trapped on a Middle Cove cliff Tuesday evening.

The high-angle rescue happened in the area of Sugarloaf Hill, near Memorial University’s Ocean Sciences Centre.

Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove Mayor Bradley Power told CBC News Tuesday that the two people, each of whom had climbing experience, were on the East Coast Trail trying to recover a lost animal.

“They went down to try to recover the dog, and unfortunately they ran out of time here this evening,” Power said.

“We’re confident that these individuals are going to be perfectly fine, but of course a big operation to get these people back to the parking lot safely.”

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department, Rovers Search and Rescue and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were all part of the rescue effort response.
