Rescue Operation Underway for Two People Trapped on Middle Cove Cliff

Fire and search and rescue teams are on the verge of completing a significant rescue operation for two individuals trapped on a cliff in Middle Cove. The incident occurred near Sugarloaf Hill, close to Memorial University’s Ocean Sciences Centre, on Tuesday evening.

According to Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove Mayor Bradley Power, the pair, both experienced climbers, were traversing the East Coast Trail in an attempt to recover a lost dog. “They went down to try to recover the dog, and unfortunately they ran out of time here this evening,” Power remarked, emphasizing the challenges faced during the rescue.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Power expressed confidence in the well-being of the individuals, stating, “We’re confident that these individuals are going to be perfectly fine, but of course, a big operation to get these people back to the parking lot safely.”

The rescue involved a coordinated effort from multiple agencies, including the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, Rovers Search and Rescue, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Their collective response highlights the collaboration necessary in emergency situations, especially in challenging terrains.
