A relative of the victim visited the site of the accident, expressing his grief and shock, hours after the incident happened. He declined to speak publicly at this time.

“When I got here, I saw medics working on the child. He appeared, whenever they were putting him in the ambulance, he appeared that he was not moving. He wasn’t conscious at all,” said neighbor Orlando Bonilla.

Bonilla said he lives across the street from where the accident happened. He said he didn’t see the accident, but witnessed the aftermath.

“It was devastating to see a child go that young,” he added.

Michael Morgan, a parent passing through the neighborhood, shared his grief.

“I wouldn’t know how to take that if one of my kids was run over by a school bus like that. That is very sad and like I said, I’m praying for the family,” Morgan stated.

He added a message for other drivers: “Everybody, please pay attention to your kids and pay attention to the kids getting off the buses. The stop signs on the bus is for a reason. Stop when you see them, please.”

In a statement from Oklahoma City Public Schools, officials said:

“We are heartbroken to share that a Fillmore first-grade student was struck by an OKCPS school bus a short distance from the school shortly after dismissal today. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, the student has passed away.

Our thoughts are with the student’s family, loved ones, the first responders and our entire Fillmore community as we grieve this tremendous loss. Beginning tomorrow, we will have dedicated counselors and additional support staff on site to support our students and staff who may need assistance.

OKCPS is grateful for the quick response of first responders, and we will work closely with law enforcement as they continue their investigation.”
