Man Utd vs. West Ham: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Manchester United are seeking back-to-back Premier League wins when they welcome West Ham United to Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The Red Devils endured embarrassment during their most recent outing on home turf, sinking to a disastrous 1–0 defeat against 10-man Everton. However, they returned to winning ways last weekend as they secured a crucial comeback victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount were the surprise goalscoring double act in the capital as United ended a three-game winless streak, but Ruben Amorim’s team remains an inconsistent force as they aim for Champions League qualification.

West Ham had been enjoying a purple patch of from that included successive wins over Newcastle United and Burnley, but Nuno Espírito Santo’s side slipped into old habits in their 2–0 weekend defeat against struggling Liverpool. The Irons offered nothing in the final third as they slumped to another lifeless loss.

They can take solace from their excellent recent record against the Red Devils, however, with four wins from the last five meetings. The Hammers have tasted victory twice at Old Trafford over the past four years, including a 2–0 triumph as recently as May.

Here is Sports Illustrated’s guide to the clash in Manchester.

Matheus Cunha has been absent since the November international break, but the Brazilian forward has now returned to training ahead of West Ham’s visit. He should be involved in some capacity, although he’s not guaranteed to start.

United will continue without summer signing Benjamin Šeško as he battles a knee injury sustained at Tottenham Hotspur, while centre back Harry Maguire, who was injured in the same game, will also stay sidelined with a hamstring issue.

Lisandro Martínez made his much-anticipated return as a late substitute against Palace, marking a first appearance for the Red Devils since February. Amorim will need to be careful with his re-integration after such a lengthy layoff.

Zirkzee and Mount have done their chances of starting no harm, with well-taken goals against the Eagles. But Amorim spoke of two mystery doubts at his prematch press conference.

Lucas Paquetá will be a sizeable miss for West Ham at Old Trafford. He’s suspended after his bizarre red card against Liverpool, receiving two bookings for dissent within the same incident.

He will join three injured teammates on the sidelines as Łukasz Fabiański, Oliver Scarles and Crysencio Summerville all sit out the trip to Old Trafford. The latter is close to returning after a brief layoff but the Manchester United match is expected to come too soon for him.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka will start at right back against his former club, while Tomáš Souček will likely come in for the suspended Paquetá.

West Ham predicted lineup vs. Man Utd (4-2-3-1): Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Todibo, Diouf; Magassa, Potts; Bowen, Souček, Fernandes; Wilson.

Nuno could learn a lesson from former West Ham and United manager David Moyes about how to beat this iteration of the Red Devils. The Everton boss masterminded a defensive plan that completely nullified Amorim’s side less than two weeks ago.

However, West Ham might not have the quality to grab a decisive goal at the other end of the pitch, especially if they produce a similarly tame display as to their weekend showing against Liverpool.

The Irons are also struggling for clean sheets and the hosts will fancy their chances of breaking through, even against a deep-lying defence. Some individual magic from the likes of Bruno Fernandes or Bryan Mbeumo is never too far from view.

It’s unlikely to be a thriller at Old Trafford, but United won’t care if they clinch another crucial victory.

Prediction: Man Utd 1–0 West Ham
