UTSA OC Justin Burke Expected to Join Will Stein at Kentucky

UTSA offensive coordinator Justin Burke is accepting a job with Kentucky, sources confirm to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Burke, who took over play calling for the Roadrunners ahead of the 2023 season when Will Stein left for Oregon, will become the offensive coordinator for Stein with the Wildcats. Both Stein and Burke played in-state with Louisville and were on staff together for years at UTSA.

UTSA finished 23rd nationally in scoring offense with 33.8 points per game in 2025. The unit was 27thnationally with 33.2 points per game in 2024 and 33rd in 2023 while scoring 31.9 points per game. The Roadrunners were 14th in the FBS in Stein’s final season calling plays with 36.8 points per game. UTSA went 7-6 in 2023 and are 6-6 in 2025, leading to some unrest and criticism from the fan base over the last two years.

Tight end coach Hunter Rittimann is expected to call plays for UTSA in the bowl game and could become the full-time play caller for 2026. Head coach Jeff Traylor prefers hiring from within, elevating Stein when Barry Lunney left for Illinois and then Burke when Stein left for Oregon. Expect UTSA to also interview other people within the football building and from the outside during the search.

UTSA should put up big numbers offensively again in 2026 with the expected return of quarterback Owen McCown and some key offensive pieces around him if the Roadrunners can survive the transfer portal.
