Around half of the Swiss population uses artificial intelligence in everyday life. The new technology is also widening the digital divide. These are the key findings of the latest survey on internet use in Swiss households.

In 2025, two out of five people in Switzerland would use artificial intelligence to create texts or images. Among 15 to 24-year-olds, the figure is as high as four out of five. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday.

According to the FSO, more than a third of users make use of these tools on a daily basis. The systems are most frequently used for private purposes (38%), followed by professional purposes (31%). At schools and universities, the figure is as high as 75%.

The FSO published official figures on the use of artificial intelligence in Switzerland for the first time. The spring survey also revealed that the use of generative AI tools varies greatly depending on the socio-demographic profile and that the existing inequalities in the general use of digital technologies are even more pronounced in the case of AI.

For example, use decreases sharply with increasing age, as the FSO press release goes on to say. While 79% of young people use AI tools, only 28% of 55 to 64-year-olds do so. People with a higher level of education would also use AI at an above-average rate.

According to the FSO, the survey on internet use also confirmed that the population is increasingly confronted with disinformation, hate speech or fraud online.
