Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has revealed that Alphonso Davies could make his first appearance in almost nine months next weekend.
Davies, 24, the Canada international winger and full-back, tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee while on international duty in March, an injury which caused considerable tension between his club and country, but returned to full training two weeks ago and is set to make a competitive return imminently.
“If everything goes according to plan, he could get his first minutes of playing time against Mainz (on Sunday December 14),” Kompany revealed at his news conference on Friday. “We’re really happy about that. It’s looking good.”
Kompany stressed that there was no rush to involve Davies in either of Bayern’s next two games, against Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Saturday, or in the Champions League against Sporting Club on Tuesday.
“He’s very close to a comeback, but not tomorrow,” Kompany said. “We’ve been patient; a comeback in 2025 is a bonus for us.”
The injury was a bitter blow for club and player. After a protracted saga and significant doubt as to whether Davies would be staying at Allianz Arena, he committed his future by signing a new contract in February 2025, just over a month before suffering the injury that has kept him out since, and prevented him from taking part in the Club World Cup in the summer.
The news of his return will also be significant to Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch, for whom Davies will be a pivotal player at next summer’s World Cup, which will be drawn at 12pm ET on Friday in Washington.
