With the season almost at the halfway point and the January transfer window approaching, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 482 Eredivisie players. Following the update, there is a new most valuable player in the Dutch first division. Following a €5 million drop in evaluation for Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber, and a €5m increase for Ismael Saibari (from €27m to €32m) the latter is now the most valuable player in the Eredivisie.
“He had a fantastic October,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Netherlands Jesper Siereveld said. “With goals against Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, and a hat-trick in the top-of-the-table clash against Feyenoord, he really took PSV by the hand.” The 24-year-old Moroccan national team player has now scored 10 goals and provided 2 assists in 19 games across all competitions. Siereveld added: “His statistics were already good last season, but he seems to have taken another step forward this season. There will undoubtedly be interest in him this winter, with Olympique Marseille’s name already mentioned in the media.”
The PSV Eindhoven forward isn’t the only player on his team to see a significant increase in market value. One player to watch is 20-year-old PSV defender Yarek Gasiorowski. “Since his arrival, he has immediately established himself as a key player,” Siereveld said. “Whereas Ryan Flamingo (-€3m to €17m) has now been relegated to the bench, Gasiorowski’s place in Peter Bosz’s team is not in question. He still has occasional slip-ups, but once he becomes more consistent, he may well be the next big sale for the Eindhoven club.” As a result, Gasiorowski saw his market value increase by 60% from €10m to €16m.
Eredivisie market values: Parrott and Smit spearhead AZ Alkmaar upgrades
Elsewhere, at AZ Alkmaar, Irish national team hero Troy Parrott saw his market value increase significantly from €16m to €22m. “Everyone has seen his important goals for the Irish national team, but he is also on a roll for his club AZ,” Siereveld said. “Despite his injury, he has already scored 14 goals in 16 matches.” As a result, Parrott has already drawn interest from clubs playing in Europe’s top five leagues. “Stuttgart has been mentioned as a club interested in signing him.”
The Irish forward isn’t the only AZ player who has stood out in recent weeks. His 19-year-old teammate, Kees Smit, has had a fantastic start to the season and saw his market value increase by 120% from €10m to €22m. “One of the most talented Dutch players at the moment,” Siereveld said about Smit. “Last summer, he became European champion with the Netherlands Under-19 team, was voted player of the tournament, is an undisputed first-team player for AZ at the age of 19, impressed a lot in the Conference League match against Crystal Palace, and is reportedly being eyed by Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Newcastle United, among others.”
Other AZ Alkmaar players with upgrades are Sven Mijnans (+€2m to €14m), Wouter Gous (+€2m to €12m), Weslley Patati (+€500,000 to €7.5m), and Rome Jayden Owusu-Oduro (+€1m to €7m). Those upgrades aren’t that surprising; Alkmaar have been excellent this season and are currently third in the Eredivisie.
Feyenoord market values: Read and Valente on the up
Among the major upgrades are also two players from second-placed Feyenoord: Givairo Read and Luciano Valente. Both players are considered exciting talents in the Eredivisie. “He started this season injured and has now been injured again, but that has not diminished interest in him,” Siereveld said about Read. “Bayern Munich and Manchester City are being mentioned in particular. The latter would even like to sign him this winter, something Feyenoord is unlikely to be keen on.” With interest high, Read’s market value has gone from €20m to €25m.
While Read remains on the radar of top clubs, Valente is another player to keep an eye on. “Things have moved quickly for Valente,” Siereveld said. “He is one of the few players who has been able to escape the slump at Feyenoord at the moment and has quickly established himself as the playmaker in midfield. To cap off his fantastic first half of the season, he made his debut for the Dutch national team, ruling out an international career with Italy.” Valente saw his market value increase by 80% from €10m to €18m.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
