Power Outage Affects Over 3,000 Customers in Greater Victoria Due to Stormy Weather

A significant power outage affected the Metchosin and Langford regions of Greater Victoria on the afternoon of December 5, 2025, leading to widespread disruptions for thousands of residents. The outage, reported by BC Hydro at approximately 2:59 PM, was attributed to strong winds and heavy rainfall that caused trees to fall over power lines.
As of 7:35 PM, the number of customers without electricity had initially decreased from 3,054 to 1,953 as crews began to address the issue. However, shortly thereafter, the number of affected customers rose back to 3,054, indicating that the restoration efforts faced setbacks, likely due to continued adverse weather conditions.
Initially, the outage impacted areas including Metchosin, the Latoria area of Langford, and parts of Colwood, particularly the Royal Bay area and the Esquimalt Lagoon. By 7:44 PM, power had been restored to the Metchosin area, while about 1,078 customers in the Royal Bay and Ryder Hesjedal areas remained without service. Restoration crews were actively engaged in the area, working to restore power as quickly as possible.
The severe weather, characterized by wind gusts reaching 60 km/h and even up to 80 km/h near the Juan de Fuca Strait, has been a contributing factor, with forecasts indicating that these conditions were expected to persist. Current temperatures hovered between 9°C and 11°C.
