WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
This marks the first rematch of the early PWHL season with New York scoring a 5-1 victory over Vancouver when the teams met last Saturday in Newark. Five of the league’s 13 games so far have been four-goal differentials including both Sirens’ wins after New York had just one victory by four or more goals in both the 2024 and 2024-25 seasons.
Five different Sirens tallied a goal when New York played Vancouver last week. The only other game in which New York had five different players hit the back of the net in team history was last season on Jan. 4 against Minnesota.
Sarah Fillier leads the league with 18 shots on goal and the Sirens have outshot their opponent in all four of their games this season. New York is the only PWHL team to have a positive SOG differential in every game this season and are +28 overall. The Goldeneyes have been outshot in three straight games and rank eighth in shot differential at -33.
Paetyn Levis scored New York’s only goal in Wednesday’s 5-1 loss in Seattle and has goals in consecutive games. Defenders Jincy Roese and Lauren Bernard both have two-game assist streaks.
Micah Zandee-Hart is expecting up to 60 family members and friends for her first PWHL game in her home province, with many seeing the Sirens captain compete in person for the first time. It will be a full-circle moment for the 28-year-old defender from Saanichton, BC, who began her hockey journey on Vancouver Island at age four, spending a decade with the Peninsula Minor Hockey Association before heading to Cornell.
Anne Cherkowski, who recorded her first two PWHL assists last Saturday against Vancouver, also returns to her home province for the first time as a pro. The Coldstream, BC rookie, selected by the Sirens in the second round of June’s draft, played her youth hockey with the Thompson Okanagan Lakers, part of the BC Elite Hockey League.
In their two games played on Saturdays this season, New York has delivered two victories, outscoring opponents, 9-1, in those games. Last season, the Sirens won just once in five games played on a Saturday.
Vancouver’s only victory this season came in their lone home game, a 4-3 overtime win in the season opener over Seattle. The only team in PWHL history to win its first two home games was Minnesota in the league’s inaugural season. No other team has ever gone without a regulation win in their first four games of the season.
Sophie Jaques has fired off at least three shots on goal in all four games this season. Jaques has 30 career games with at least three shots on goal, nine more games than any other defender in PWHL history. She leads all rearguards with 15 shots on goal, seven more than the next highest defender.
Gabby Rosenthal is one of five Goldeneyes to score a goal this season. The former New York forward recorded a career-high 17:58 time on ice last week against her former team.
Hannah Miller has averaged 18.3 faceoffs per game this season after an average of 10.8 last season with Toronto. She ranks second overall with 73 draws behind New York’s Kristin O’Neill with 85. The Sirens forward leads the league with a 61.2 win percentage at the dot among centers with more than 50 faceoff attempts. Miller’s win percentage is 46.6.
Darcie Lappan leads Vancouver with eight hits in four games despite averaging the lowest time on ice among the team’s forwards (8:38). She’s one of three rookies that rank among the league’s top six players in hits.
Vancouver is the only team in the PWHL that has yet to score the game’s first goal, while New York is the only team without a power play goal despite leading the league with 10 total goals.
Fans watching the broadcast may be familiar with the play-by-play voice of James Cybulski who has been calling the action for the EA Sports NHL series for seven years, including the PWHL’s debut in the popular game last season. Analyst Blake Bolden is also no stranger to women’s hockey fans having played with and against many of the league’s top talents with the U.S. program, NCAA, and pro ranks. During the 2017-18 season, the defender played alongside Sirens rookie Nicole Vallario, then just 16, with the SWHL’s Ladies Team Lugano.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“This is a game I’ve had circled on the calendar for sure. A lot of people will be in attendance that helped me get to where I am today but haven’t had the opportunity to watch me play at this level. Our team is continuing to grow every day, and Saturday is a big opportunity for us to take another step forward.” – Sirens Captain Micah Zandee-Hart
“Important this game is winning all the battles, playing with speed and a good transition game. I think just doing the little things in the d-zone will translate into giving us more offensive opportunities. I’m so excited to be back in the Pacific Coliseum, just thinking back to the first game, all the fans and all the excitement there was around every play. I’m super excited to have that support around us and to play back at home.” – Goldeneyes forward Gabby Rosenthal
SATURDAY’S GAME: The Goldeneyes return to the Pacific Coliseum for the first time since the inaugural home opener Nov. 21 that featured an overtime win against Seattle and a sold-out crowd of 14,958. Kids Takeover Day highlights the first of six Saturday games on the team’s inaugural home schedule. Young fans will be taking over many of the team’s gameday roles from anthem singer to photographer, in-arena host and DJ. The concourse will have bracelet and sign making stations, and intermission activities will feature mini hockey games and on-ice bowling. Fans under 18 who are attending the game can also meet Goldeneyes Sarah Nurse, Nina Jobst-Smith and Kim Newell inside the South Plaza doors for an autograph signing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. PT.
