Both Saubers and a Haas in the top six matters

Lando Norris topped the timesheets in Abu Dhabi’s first practice session, narrowly beating title rival Max Verstappen by just 0.008 seconds.

Charles Leclerc rounded out the top three for Ferrari. The session featured an unusually crowded grid with nine rookies taking part, including McLaren reserve Pato O’Ward (filling in for Oscar Piastri) and future Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli impressed with fourth place as the Silver Arrows chase second in the constructors’ championship.

The hour wasn’t without drama. Haas’s Ollie Bearman suffered a power unit issue and retired early, while Leclerc spun at Turn 5. Verstappen also reported potential problems with his car, but continued running.

Verstappen lapping so close to the championship leader should keep McLaren sweating.
