Hallmark Movie to Feature the Pop Star & ‘American Idol’ Alum Who Inspired It

Pop star and “American Idol” alum Lauren Spencer Smith is about to appear in a Hallmark Christmas movie — and it’s one she inspired.

On December 7, 2025, Hallmark Channel will premiere its original movie “Single on the 25th” starring network fan-favorites Daniel Lissing and Lyndsy Fonesca, with a cameo by Spencer Smith, whose 2022 song of the same name inspired the rom-com.

Lauren Spencer Smith Says She Watches Hallmark Christmas Movies With Her Friends Each Year

In a promotional video taken on the set of Hallmark’s “Single on the 25th” and shared across the network’s social media, Spencer Smith said she’s thrilled to be in a Hallmark movie.

“I was over the moon,” she said of learning her song had inspired a new movie and that she would be in it. “I called my mom, I called my boyfriend, I called everyone. I’m so excited because Christmas is my favorite holiday.”

“Honestly, every Christmas, me and my friends watch Hallmark Christmas movies,” Spencer Smith beamed, “so I’m so excited that one that I will be a part of will be part of that tradition going forward.”

Like in Spencer Smith’s song, Hallmark’s “Single on the 25th” is about a woman who hates being single during the holidays “because everywhere she looks, couples are kissing under the mistletoe.”

Fonesca plays Nell, whose family cancels their holiday plans at the last minute, leaving her to try making the most of her week alone. But after an unexpected run-in with her neighbor Cooper, played by Lissing, the proud bachelor gives her some tips on enjoying single life during the holidays.

The movie was filmed in September in Montréal, per Casting Workbook. During the shoot, Spencer Smith told Hallmark, “My experience on set so far has been amazing. Everybody is so kind. You know, the lead actors just feel like family and friends. It’s so cute, and I love it.”

While her song “Single on the 25th” is a tear-jerker that “everyone can relate to,” Spencer Smith told Hallmark she loves that the movie dives deeper into the story and has a “happy ending.”

During season 18 of “American Idol” in 2020, Spencer Smith advanced to the Hawaii round as part of the Top 20, but the pandemic soon shut down live production, forcing the contestants and judges to appear from their homes for the rest of the season. Spencer Smith was eliminated after her first at-home performance, along with eight other contestants.

The Canadian-born songstress had a very different look back then, and used the rest of the pandemic to hone her songwriting skills and find her voice as an artist, telling the Toronto Star two years later that being eliminated from the show “definitely was a kick-start to ‘Yeah, I’m gonna prove everybody wrong.’”

She certainly did. By the summer of 2022, Spencer Smith had two massive hits with “Fingers Crossed” and “Flowers,” which has over 47 million views on YouTube. That led to a bidding war between major record labels, according to Variety. She eventually signed a record deal with Republic and Island Records, and a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music.

Spencer Smith released her sophomore album, “The Art of Being a Mess,” in June. After recently touring Europe and Australia, she’ll kick off the U.S. and Canadian leg of her tour in early February.

“Single on the 25th” premieres on Hallmark Channel on December 7 at 8 p.m. Eastern time and will be available to stream the next day via Hallmark+.
