Weekend Outlook: December’s deep freeze deepens

While snowfall amounts remain manageable, the real story is another surge of the Polar Vortex, bringing bone-chilling cold that grips the area later this weekend
The active December pattern shows no signs of relenting across the Sault region, with another 2-5 cm of fresh snow expected on Friday night. While snowfall amounts remain manageable, the real story is another surge of the Polar Vortex, bringing bone-chilling cold that grips the area later this weekend. The combination of fresh snow cover, clear skies, and an arctic high-pressure system creates ideal conditions for extreme cooling, with overnight temperatures of -20°C or lower possible in some areas.
Mostly cloudy to cloudy skies continue Friday with a few morning flurries giving way to afternoon temperatures near -3°C. Another wave brings widespread light snow overnight with 2 to 5 cm expected across the region.
Saturday brings mostly cloudy conditions with snow showers continuing as winds shift to the northwest. Lake-effect snow develops across the traditional snowbelts, with an additional 2 to 5 cm expected. Temperatures remain cool at -4°C during the day, then plunge to -13°C overnight as high pressure builds from the northwest.
Sunday will be partly cloudy, becoming mostly cloudy with light snow developing later in the day as a weak system passes to the south. Only a trace to 2 cm of accumulation is expected. Afternoon temperatures struggle to reach -7°C before dropping to a dangerous -16°C overnight, with some interior locations possibly approaching -20°C.
