Major Swansea roundabout closes again after torrential downpours cause flooding

A nearby blocked culvert has caused severe flooding at the roundabout on several occasions in recent months

A major Swansea roundabout which previously flooded so badly that locals swam, fished and paddleboarded around it has been closed again after a period of heavy rainfall. Cwmbwrla Roundabout has been shut a number of times since September, when traffic had to be diverted for a number of days due to the flooding.
On Monday morning, amid a rare amber weather warning for rain, Swansea Council confirmed that the roundabout was closed once again due to rising water levels. Follow our live updates on the weather here.
The council said the decision had been made as a “precaution”. Never miss a Swansea story by signing up to our newsletter here
At the start of November, cars became stuck on the roundabout with officers from South Wales Police called to the scene.
On that occasion, the council said a blocked culvert near to the roundabout caused the flooding.
A spokesperson for the council today explained: “Please avoid Cwmbwrla roundabout (Carmarthen Road). Our Highways team is on site. The council is continuing to do everything it can to alleviate flood waters at Cwmbwrla roundabout.

“The culvert underneath the recently demolished Cwmfelin social club is still blocked and is the main cause of this ongoing problem. The club remains responsible for repairing the culvert.
“In the meantime we have brought in pumping equipment to assist with the flow of water.
“However, heavy and prolonged rainfall means the pumping equipment could be overwhelmed and it may be necessary for further closures of this route until the culvert is repaired. We are doing everything we can to reopen the road as soon as possible.”

On Monday morning, a post from the council said: “Water levels are starting to rise on the road surface in and around the roundabout at Cwmbwrla.
“We have closed the roundabout as a precaution and to prevent motorists from attempting to drive through and get in to trouble.
“We will continue to monitor during the day and reopen as soon as water levels have reduced.”
