Biratnagar Kings defeat Sudurpaschim in thriller

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 7:  Biratnagar Kings stunned Sudurpaschim Royals with a dominant six-wicket victory in the opening match of the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur. The match, which saw Biratnagar chasing down 148 runs, was marked by aggressive batting from the opening pair of Sam Hezlett and Faf du Plessis, who played a pivotal role in securing the win and sending their team into the first qualifier.

Sudurpaschim Royals, after losing the toss, were invited to bat first and managed to score 147 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. The top scorers for Sudurpaschim were Arif Sheikh, who remained unbeaten on 45, and Ishan Pandey, who made a valuable 38 runs. Despite their efforts, Sudurpaschim’s total was far from imposing, especially considering the explosive batting capabilities of Biratnagar.

Chasing 148 for victory, Biratnagar got off to a flying start with Hezlett and du Plessis putting on an impressive 87-run partnership in just seven overs. Du Plessis was in destructive form, smashing 50 runs off just 20 balls, including five fours and four sixes. His blistering knock earned him the Player of the Match award, although Hezlett wasn’t far behind with a quick-fire 51 runs off 27 balls, which included three fours and four sixes. Their efforts set the foundation for a comfortable chase, as Biratnagar reached the target in just 11.5 overs, finishing on 150/4.

Biratnagar’s stunning chase not only sealed the victory but also earned them a spot in the first qualifier, where they will now face Sudurpaschim Royals once again. The win was crucial for Biratnagar, as it lifted them to second place in the points table with 10 points, ahead of Kathmandu Gorkhas on net run rate. Sudurpaschim, having already qualified for the playoffs, will now look to regroup for their upcoming clash in the qualifier.

In the bowling department, Biratnagar’s captain, Sandeep Lamichhane, delivered a standout performance with the ball, taking three wickets for just 20 runs. Pratish GC and Bashir Ahamat also contributed with two wickets between them. Despite Sudurpaschim’s best efforts, the target proved to be just out of reach for them, as Biratnagar’s clinical chase highlighted their intent and power.

With Biratnagar’s impressive win, all eyes now turn to the first qualifier, where they will face Sudurpaschim once again. Sudurpaschim, although disappointed by the loss, had already secured their place in the top four and will be eager to bounce back in their next match.
