Having gone three games without a win in the Premier League, Chelsea will hope that the Champions League can bring them some respite and victory at Atalanta would bolster their claims of locking down a coveted top-eight finish.

The Blues brushed aside Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in their last Champions League assignment, but they have had plenty of troubles on their travels and Atalanta are never easy to pass at their Bergamo base.

Atalanta vs Chelsea preview

Atalanta and Chelsea have both collected ten points from the first five Champions League matchdays to put themselves within touching distance of an all-important top-eight finish.

If Chelsea can turn on the style like they did in beating Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago then they would be worthy favourites to win in Bergamo on Tuesday, but a three-game winless run in the Premier League since has checked their progress.

There was no shame about a 1-1 draw at home league leaders Arsenal, especially as they had Moises Caicedo sent off in the 38rd minute, but Chelsea have been well beaten at Leeds and managed only four shots on target in a drab goalless draw at Bournemouth on Saturday since drawing with the Gunners.

Given the Cherries had lost four of their previous five, it was a bitterly disappointing result for Enzo Maresca’s men, although the sight of Cole Palmer making his first start since September 20 will have been a huge positive for the Italian.

However, Palmer has not made the trip to Bergamo and Chelsea’s two away games in the Champions League have seen them lose 3-1 at Bayern Munich and draw 2-2 with Qarabag.

Atalanta are having a miserable time of things in Serie A, where they are 12th following seven draws in 14 matches, but they have been much more like their usual selves in the Champions League.

Raffaele Palladino has presided over three wins in five matches since replacing Ivan Juric in the hotseat, which includes a 3-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Atalanta’s sole defeat in this season’s Champions League came away to European champions PSG and they are usually hard to budge at their Bergamo base.

The Italians have lost only one of their last ten home matches and four clean sheets in their last six shows just how much Chelsea will need Enzo Ferndanez and Estevao to create chances in the absence of Palmer.

There have been only 11 goals in Atalanta’s five league-phase matches to date and the possibility of a low-scoring clash only enhance the chances of a draw.

Card could be calling for Cucurella

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella has yet to pick up a booking in this season’s Champions League but his tally of 12 fouls in four appearances makes him the joint-worst offender in the competition.

Cucurella has collected five cards in 17 domestic appearances for the Blues, however, and Atalanta have some tricky attacking players who will test his patience.

Ademola may be the man for Atalanta

Former Everton, Fulham and Leicester player Ademola Lookman has taken his game to new heights since joining Atalanta in 2022, scoring 55 goals and registering 26 assists in 132 appearances in Italy.

Lookman had a mixed start to the season under Juric but he is thriving under new boss Palladino, scoring in two of his last three appearances to suggest that he has rediscovered his spark.

Under 2.5 goals

Atalanta’s five Champions League matches have featured a total of 11 goals and three clean sheets in their last four suggests that they could frustrate the Blues.

Marc Cucurella to commit two or more fouls

The Chelsea full-back has committed 12 fouls in four Champions League appearances this season, six of which came in a 2-2 draw away to Qarabag.

Estevao to have one or more shots on target

The Brazilian has scored in Chelsea’s last three European games and should be raring to go after playing only 14 minutes from the bench in Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth.
