Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi rates ex-Manchester United star Mason Greenwood’s performance as ‘insufficient’ in scathing remark after loss

Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi was critical of former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood’s efforts in the 1-0 Ligue 1 loss at LOSC Lille at the weekend.
A 10th-minute strike from Ethan Mbappe – the younger brother of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe – was the difference between the two teams at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d’Asoq. The defeat kept Les Phoceens third in the standings, five points behind leaders Lens (34) after 15 games, winning nine.

Greenwood, 24, is in the midst of a decent campaign with Marseille, striking 11 times and assisting four in 19 outings across competitions. That includes 10 strikes and three assists in 14 games in Ligue 1, starting 13.
Critiquing the former Manchester United player’s performance at Lille, De Zerbi said (as per Manchester Evening News):
“We were passive from the first minute to the last. One shot on target for a player like Greenwood isn’t enough for him. Shooting so infrequently isn’t sufficient.”
Former Brighton & Hove Albion boss De Zerbi was also critical of his team’s performance:
“We played badly and we deserved to lose. We didn’t string three passes together. We lost every second ball. Even with dribbling, we couldn’t beat anyone. Defensively, we were never as aggressive as we usually are.”
The defeat snapped a four-game unbeaten streak across competitions for Marseille, with Lille drawing level with Les Phoceens, trailing on goal difference

Former Manchester United prodigy Mason Greenwood has been appreciative of his club boss Roberto De Zerbi, who joined Marseille in the summer of 2024 after a successful stint with Brighton.
Greenwood, 24, has found success under De Zerbi, producing 33 goals and 10 assists in 55 outings across competitions since permanently joining Les Phoceens last summer from the Red Devils
“I’m in a really good place, thanks to the coach and my teammates,” Greenwood told Telefoot about De Zerbi.
“I feel good, and I hope to improve, to win more awards this season. Roberto De Zerbi? He’s the brains of the team, the architect of our game. He helps me understand football much better. He helps me improve every day.”
Last season, the former United man produced a 22-goal six-assist campaign (in 36 games across competitions) as Marseille finished second in Ligue 1, behind quadruple winners Paris Saint-Germain.
