Champions League matchday six predictions

Wednesday’s Champions League fare with a couple of clashes at 5.45pm, with in-form Qarabag hosting fallen giants Ajax and Villarreal taking on Copenhagen.

There are some big games to enjoy at 8pm, too, when trophy-holders Paris Saint-Germain head to Athletic Bilbao and Benfica welcome Serie A champions Napoli.

Villarreal vs Copenhagen

Despite being third in La Liga, Villarreal are struggling to translate their domestic form onto the continental stage, picking up just just one point from five Champions League games.

However, they will fancy their chances against a Copenhagen side who are only three points better off and have shipped four goals against both Tottenham and Villarreal this term.

Qarabag vs Ajax

Surprise packages Qarabag lost 2-0 at Napoli in their last Champions League game but they drew 2-2 with Chelsea in their last European home outing and should bounce back against Ajax, who have lost their five games in the competition by an aggregate 16-1 scoreline.

Athletic Bilbao vs Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain finished only 15th in the league phase before going on to win last season’s Champions League, so it is a worrying sign for their rivals that they are second after five matches this time around.

Luis Enrique’s side have won four of their five league-phase matches and had scored a competition-high 19 goals heading into this week, spelling trouble for a shaky Athletic Bilbao side who have won only five of their 16 games this term.

The Parisians warmed up for their short trip to the Basque Country with a 5-0 rout of Rennes and put five past Tottenham in their last home game, suggesting another high-scoring PSG win is on the cards.

Benfica vs Napoli

Three points from five Champions League games is a disappointing return for Benfica but they are finally showing signs of life under Jose Mourinho, winning six and losing only one of their last nine games, and can pick up an important victory in Lisbon.

Napoli landed an impressive 3-1 win over Juventus on Sunday but, like most of their best work, that came at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Antonio Conte’s men have lost five of their last seven away games October’s 6-2 Champions League defeat at PSV leaves them looking vulnerable for the trip to Benfica.

Borussia Dortmund vs Bodo/Glimt

Plucky Norwegians Bodo/Glimt are giving their all in the Champions League but are yet to reap the rewards, picking up just two points, and Kjetil Knutsen needs to fix a leaky defence if they are to extend their stay at Europe’s top table.

Only Kairat Almaty (14.4) had allowed more expected goals than Bodo’s 13.8 after five games, suggesting they could be hit hard by ruthless Dortmund. Borussia look set to rack up the goals and Serhou Guirassy in particular should enjoy himself.

The Guinean goal machine netted twice against Villarreal in his last Champions League appearance and looks a big price to match or improve on that tally given Bodo’s frailty.

Juventus vs Pafos

Juventus are strong odds-on shots to see off Pafos but given they have an identical record of one win, one loss and three draws as the Cypriots, they look a touch short.
