A teacher at a northwest Edmonton K-9 school has been accused of committing sexual offences against one of his students.

Internet child exploitation investigators say 32-year-old Dylan Rosychuk allegedly engaged in a sexually explicit online conversation with a student over the last two years.

Rosychuk was previously a drama teacher at Hilwie Hamdon School. An Edmonton Public Schools spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday that he no longer works in any of its schools or division buildings.

Rosychuk was arrested Friday and charged with child luring and making sexually explicit materials available to a child. He’s also accused of making, possessing and transmitting child sexual abuse material.

A team of social workers and psychologists is currently in place at Hilwie Hamdon School as part of a “critical incident” response, according to the school division.

Staff Sgt. Alison Church, with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams’ (ALERT) internet child exploitation unit, said the investigation is still at an early stage. It’s unknown whether any other students could have been affected.

“Like any investigation we have, parents need to be talking to their kids,” she said. “And if there is anything that stands out, if there is anything that kind of raises the hair on the back of your neck, that those parents should explore that.”

Church wouldn’t give further information about the age of the complainant in the case, or how the allegations were reported, citing the need to protect the student’s identity.

“When we talk about a teacher being involved, a person in a position of authority … our consideration is that is dealt with swiftly,” she said.

Rosychuk was released from custody under court-imposed conditions earlier this month.

His next court appearance is set for Dec. 19.
