DWI ticket blitz begins. These 125 N.J. police departments got grants for holiday crackdown.

Police departments across New Jersey have started their annual holiday-season crackdown on drunk driving.

The state Division of Highway Traffic Safety‘s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” kicked off Friday and runs until Jan. 1, officials said.

State officials have distributed $703,500 to 125 law enforcement agencies for increased patrols and impaired driving checkpoints.

During the 2024 initiative, participating police departments made 590 impaired driving arrests and handed out 2,948 speeding tickets as well as 1,038 seat belt summonses.

Nearly a third of the 647 fatal crashes in New Jersey in 2024 involved a driver who had been drinking, authorities said. The crashes resulted in 684 deaths.

Fatal crashes are down this year — through Sunday there have been 502 fatal crashes in New Jersey resulting in 535 fatalities.

“No one wants an empty seat at the holiday table,” Attorney General Matt Platkin said in a statement. “Impaired driving is completely unacceptable and can have devastating consequences. Police across the state will be out removing impaired drivers from the road to protect New Jersey families during the holiday season.”
