Thursday kicks off with windy conditions, setting the tone for an unsettled weather pattern that’s here to stay. As we head into the weekend, expect gusty winds and more rain, with dreary conditions sweeping across Ireland from the Atlantic.

This shift begins today as a dry morning gives way to rainfall. Winds will persist throughout the day, blowing in from the south.

Temperatures are expected to reach around 12C, but the gusty breezes will make it feel cooler, and overnight lows could dip to 5C. Met Eireann reports: “Cloudy and dry to start this morning. Outbreaks of rain will move in early on from the West, and linger for the day until after nightfall, when it gradually clears east. Highs of 10 to 12 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds.

“Tonight will see mostly dry and clear spells develop once the rain clears. Colder than late with lows of 5 to 7 and light to moderate southerly winds.”

Friday starts off dry with some pleasant sunny spells, reports Dublin Live.

However, the winds will persist throughout the day, and isolated showers from the west are expected in the afternoon. The night will bring scattered showers, though not as heavy as previous days.

Temperatures will drop further to around 3C, with plenty of wind still in the mix.

Met Eireann added: “Friday will start dry and bright, with crisp and sunny spells. Throughout the afternoon, isolated showers will gradually feed in from the west. Highs of 9 to 11 degrees. Moderate to fresh south-west winds.

“Scattered showers will continue to affect west and northwest counties overnight. Elsewhere will see mostly dry conditions with plenty of longer clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.”

The weekend will bring strong winds once more, with gales forecast for some coastal areas. Rain will intensify, especially on Saturday, with warnings of localized flooding.

Despite brief dry intervals, rain will persist into next week. Met Eireann cautions of significant uncertainty and a “deterioration” in conditions.

Here’s the forecast:

Saturday

A dry and breezy start with bright intervals. Cloud will roll in from the west early on, bringing outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

This rain will gradually spread nationwide throughout the day, with heavy downpours at times causing localized flooding. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty south to southwest winds, with gales on Atlantic coasts.

A wet and blustery night ahead with widespread rain, heaviest along Atlantic coasts. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, strong and gusty near coasts.

Sunday

There’s some uncertainty in the details, but current indications point to a wet and windy day with more rain expected, particularly over parts of the west and southwest. The highest temperatures will range from 11 to 14 degrees, accompanied by fresh to strong southwesterly winds.

Sunday night will see the rain gradually clearing southeast, replaced by scattered showers and developing clear spells. Expect the lowest temperatures to drop to between 4 and 7 degrees, with moderating southwesterly winds.

Looking ahead to next week

The forecast for next week is still uncertain, but current signs suggest that the unsettled weather will continue. Monday is expected to start off mostly dry with scattered showers over parts of the west and north.

However, conditions will worsen early on as rain from the south gradually spreads northeastwards across the country throughout the day.
