How high did wind gusts reach during high wind warning in Iowa?

A homeowner had to chase after her helium-filled Christmas decorations after strong wind gusts blew it off her front porch.

Meteorologists are urging Iowans to keep a lookout for downed trees and power lines after a powerful windstorm swept through the state late Tuesday, Dec. 9, into Wednesday morning. Much of central and northwestern Iowa was under a high wind warning until 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Where in Iowa had the highest wind gusts?

The front brought wind gusts of more than 70 mph to Iowa.

Here are the cities with the highest wind speeds in mph:

  • Sioux City: 71 mph
  • Carroll: 68 mph
  • Des Moines: 66 mph
  • Council Bluffs: 62 mph
  • Estherville and Denison: 61 mph

Wind also closed the Mile Long Bridge over Saylorville Lake on Iowa 415. It reopened around 8 a.m.
