Michael J. Fox, who played one of history’s most famous time–travelling characters, recently opened up about his favorite book from the genre. The author of five memoirs had plenty to say about books in his latest interview.

Michael J. Fox, who retired from acting in 2020, is best known for his role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. He played what would become one of the most popular characters in one of the most popular films in the world.
Since his 1991 diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, Fox has not been as active in the industry. However, in the meantime, he has written five books, including this year’s Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum.
In his latest email interview with the New York Times, the actor and author spoke about multiple aspects of his reading habit. He revealed that he was very passionate about Agatha Christie’s work as a pre-teen and grew up reading noir in the following years. He also revealed that the latest great book he read was A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.
After talking about why he liked revisiting his time from Back to the Future, the actor was asked about his favorite book from the time-travel genre.
He explained, “I have to point to Jack Finney’s books, especially ‘Time and Again,’ in which the low-tech Dakota-building-as-time-machine device is particularly genius.” In the next question, Fox further explained that he liked books that appealed to him emotionally.
“I can always tell if an author is reaching for my mind or my heart. If he or she is reaching for my mind, I confess they can overshoot and leave me frustrated for lack of comprehension. An author who reaches for my heart can often end up in the ballpark. Emotional work sneaks up on you and leaves you feeling something you might not otherwise,” he explained.
