Given the stresses, strains and constant pressure, you have to ask why you would want a career in football management.
Rookie West Brom boss Ryan Mason has experienced the highs of a solid start to the season which had them nicely in the top six for the first couple of months but suddenly the spotlight is on him for very different reasons.
Seven successive away defeats, including two this week with six goals conceded and slipping to 16th place have got everyone at bit twitchy at The Hawthorns.
“Ultimately it’s always the coach’s responsibility, that is the reality of football but then there’s always a responsibility when you represent this club, whether you’re a coach, player, kitman there’s a certain level of expectation that you need to perform at,” said Mason after Tuesday’s loss at Southampton.
“At the moment, me, and I think we need to share the responsibility, we’re not hitting those standards.”
At least they are back on home turf tonight where they are six games unbeaten – if that form starts to dip then there really would be cause for concern.
