Leonardo DiCaprio explains reason he always wears a face mask in public

Discussing his unique experience beyond his profession as one of the world’s most identifiable celebrities, DiCaprio suggests his career longevity depends on limiting his public visibility, reports the Mirror.

Arguing that staying out of the spotlight also serves his professional interests, he added: “I was like: ‘OK, how do I have a long career?’ Because I love what I do, and I feel like the best way to have a long career is to get out of people’s face.”

The actor believes the optimal approach is to ‘disappear unless you have something to say’, sharing with TIME magazine: “It’s been a balance I’ve been managing my whole adult life and still I’m not an expert.

“I think my simple philosophy is only get out there and do something when you have something to say, or you have something to show for it. Otherwise, just disappear as much as you possibly can.”

The star of The Talented Mr Ripley is rarely spotted in public without a hat or face mask to conceal his identity. He began wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued the practice.

At Amazon CEO Jeff Besos’ summer wedding in Venice, Leo was only photographed with his baseball cap pulled low over his face, maintaining his attempt to go unnoticed.

In August, the actor shared his one career regret, candidly discussing his decision to pass on “a profound movie of my generation”.

The Oscar-winning actor, known for roles in films like The Wolf of Wall Street, This Boy’s Life, The Revenant, and Catch Me If You Can, revealed that his biggest regret from his film career was turning down a role that Mark Wahlberg eventually played.

Wahlberg’s performance in the 1997 box office success Boogie Nights brought him worldwide recognition, and Leo expressed remorse after watching the film he had turned down.

Speaking to Esquire, Leo confessed: “My biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights. It was a profound movie of my generation. I can’t imagine anyone but Mark [Wahlberg] in it. When I finally got to see that movie, I just thought it was a masterpiece.”
