Active shooter on campus, Department of Public Safety reports

At least 20 victims were reportedly injured near Barus and Holley and Macmillan Hall in an active shooter incident, according to a Providence Fire radio broadcast. A 5:27 p.m. update from the Department of Public Safety reported shots fired near Governor Street. At that time, DPS reported that law enforcement was responding at the scene.
There are currently no suspects in custody, according to a 5:10 p.m. alert from DPS. A suspect was allegedly in custody at 4:50 p.m, according to an earlier alert from DPS.
Video footage obtained by The Herald showed several police officers on campus as well as several emergency vehicles on the surrounding roads. Additional footage depicted police appearing to assist several individuals lying on the ground near the Sciences Library.
Several buildings across campus have been placed on lockdown.
Katie Sun ’28 was studying in the Engineering Research Center lobby when she heard gunshots around 4:10 p.m. She evacuated the building, leaving behind all her belongings, and ran to her dorm for safety.
“It was honestly quite terrifying. The shots seemed like they were coming from … where the classrooms are,” she said.
DPS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
