West Ham vs Aston Villa preview
Shoots of recovery are starting to blossom at the London Stadium but take Unai Emery’s ruthless Villa to trample them into the dirt on Sunday afternoon.
Two impressive away draws at Manchester United and Brighton have done wonders for morale in the claret-and-blue quarter of East London – if not their league position.
They went into the weekend 18th in the table despite having taken nine points from their last six matches, indicative of the type of scrap that can be expected for a couple of relegation spots come the season’s end.
West Ham would love to think they won’t be a part of that battle and there is no doubt they look better organised and occasionally dangerous under Nuno Espirito Santo.
He just needs them to stop conceding goals – they have not had a clean sheet since August – and improve their form at the London Stadium, where they have dropped 15 points out of the 21 played for.
But at least they take positivity into what is going to be a serious test against a Villa side who aren’t just unbeaten – they are winning games in abundance.
A team who failed to win any of their first five have since gone on to win nine out of ten as well as juggle an excellent campaign in the Europa League which looks, barring a calamity, as though it should end with a ticket straight into the last 16.
That’s for the future. For now, they are making sure they follow up last Saturday’s outstanding 2-1 win over Arsenal which hoisted them to third in the table. And with the novelty of a week off to come, they can chuck the kitchen sink at this assignment.
Villa are seventeen points superior to the Hammers after 15 rounds of games and that is a gulf even the most blinkered West Ham admirers would acknowledge.
And while that doesn’t always guarantee superiority over 90 minutes, the visitors are a hard team to oppose right now.
Cash in on Matty’s hot streak
Matty Cash was one of Villa’s goal heroes against Arsenal so back the right-back while he is hot to hit the target again at the London Stadium. He has three goals in the league this season and is averaging a shot a game.
Numbers add up to narrow away win
Villa’s last six matches have yielded one-goal wins, four of them 2-1. They aren’t sweeping opponents away and given their penchant for a 2-1 triumph, that looks a sensible correct-score bet.
West Ham vs Aston Villa Bet Builder
Soungoutou Magassa to be shown a card
It will be a battleground in midfield and West Ham’s Soungoutou Magassa won’t be found wanting, which could lead to a third card in eight games.
Over 4.5 Aston Villa corners
West Ham are conceding almost seven corners per game in front of their own fans which means Villa can clock up at least five.
Jarrod Bowen to have to or more shots
Bowen is averaging 2.7 shots per game and never needs a second invite to chance his arm.

West Ham vs Aston Villa team news and predicted line-ups
West Ham
Nuno went with a back five at Brighton and they looked organised which may make him tempted to keep the shape. He is a notorious tinkerer, however, and may return Wan-Bissaka and Diouf to their natural full-back roles.
Predicted line-up (4-2-3-1): Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Todibo, Diouf; Magassa, Potts; Fernandes, Paqueta, Summerville; Bowen.
Subs: Walker-Peters, Kilman, Potts, Soucek, Irving, Rodriguez, Fullkrug.
Aston Villa
Tyrone Mings and Ross Barkley continue to miss out for Villa, who will assess both Emi Martinez and Pau Torres after they missed the midweek trip to Basel.
Predicted line-up (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Onana; McGinn, Tielemans, Rogers; Watkins.
Subs: Lindelof, Digne, Bogarde, Guessand, Sancho, Buendia, Malen.
