Sunderland vs Newcastle preview

Sunderland are one point above Newcastle going into their first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby since 2015-16 – something only the most optimistic of Black Cats supporters would have anticipated.

At the start of the season, Newcastle were 8-15 to finish in the top six and promoted Sunderland were 80-1 outsiders in that market.

But the Black Cats are purring under Regis Le Bris and they will be defending a couple of proud unbeaten records in Sunday’s game.

Newcastle won 3-0 at the Stadium of Light in an FA Cup third-round tie in January 2024 but Sunderland have not lost any of their last nine league meetings with the Magpies.

And last term’s Championship playoff winners are yet to lose at home in the top flight, drawing 2-2 with leaders Arsenal and beating Bournemouth 3-2 in their last two games on their own patch.

Sunderland had to come from 2-0 down against the Cherries and backers of both teams to score and over 2.5 goals were celebrating inside 30 minutes.

That looks a good bet in the derby as both sides have had gruelling starts to their December schedule and Newcastle’s recent games have been full of goals.

The Magpies conceded a late equaliser in this week’s 2-2 Champions League draw at Bayer Leverkusen and nine of their last ten league matches saw both teams score and over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle’s only away win in the league was last month’s 4-1 victory at Everton, who had played with ten men for more than 75 minutes in their previous fixture at Manchester United.

Sunderland’s intensity has been hugely impressive and they can cause problems for a shaky Newcastle defence.

But they allowed 41 shots at goal in last week’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool and 3-0 defeat at Manchester City so the free-scoring visitors should also create chances.

Bookings bettors should talk about Bruno

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was sent off late in the first half of their last league fixture at Sunderland and Magpies midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is a leading card candidate on Sunday.

The Brazilian was booked in the 2024 FA Cup win at the Stadium of Light and averages 1.8 fouls per 90 minutes in the Premier League and Champions League this term.

Underrated Murphy could strike first in derby

Jacob Murphy remains one of Newcastle’s main attacking threats and he is worth a bet at double-figure odds to open the scoring.

The underrated winger has fired in 15 shots in his last five Premier League starts, breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute at home to Fulham and the fourth minute at West Ham.
