TV presenter Sarah Greene, known for shows such as Blue Peter, Going Live! and more recently The Finish Line, has experienced both professional success and personal tragedy.

The beloved television personality suffered the devastating loss of her husband, Mike Smith, 11 years ago. The couple, who had been married for a quarter of a century, were a fixture on British TV, with Mike also enjoying a successful career as a presenter on Top Of The Pops.

Known affectionately as ‘Smitty’, he sadly passed away at the age of 59.

In the months following his passing, probate records revealed that the former BBC Radio 1 DJ had bequeathed his entire estate to Sarah.

Reports at the time indicated that his will amounted to £1,190,284, excluding any jointly owned property or assets between him and Sarah, now 68.

Sarah and Mike’s love story began in the 1980s, and they married in 1989, a year after both of them survived a helicopter crash.

The couple were en route to visit friends, with Mike at the controls, when their helicopter collided with trees near their intended landing site in Gloucestershire.

Both sustained broken bones, and Sarah spent several weeks in the hospital, but they made a full recovery. In the aftermath of the accident, Mike proposed.

Following Mike’s death, Sarah found love again with ex-racing driver Robb Gravett, a friend of the couple.

The telly star, who made a comeback in 2023 alongside Roman Kemp for BBC One’s quiz show The Finish Line, previously hinted that she believed her late husband played a part in her new love story.

During her appearance on the My Time Capsule podcast in 2022, she revealed, “I sort of know Mike is pulling so many strings in my life.

“He has undoubtedly been responsible for me meeting my beloved, who was one of his oldest friends, who waited a certain amount of time but did keep leaving messages on the answering machine. I thought he was just being kind.”

She went on to explain that she received what she referred to as “a message” encouraging her to respond to Robb.

She shared that the message instructed her: “For God’s sake, Greeno, Robb is trying to make contact with you because he actually wants to take you out, not because he’s kind. So will you just get off your arse and go and answer the phone next time it rings!”

Sarah and Roman are gracing our screens again this week with The Festive Finish Line, a series of Christmas specials featuring a slew of familiar faces competing in the contest.
