The Texas A&M Aggies are preparing for the College Football Playoff, but head coach Mike Elko isn’t just focused on preparing his team for a showdown against the Miami Hurricanes.
Elko is in the midst of a search for a new offensive coordinator after Collin Klein accepted the position as Kansas State’s new head coach following the abrupt retirement of Chris Kleiman. Earlier this week the Aggies head coach offered an update on the search.
“I think we’re in a pretty good place with it,” Elko said of the search. “Our intentions right now are to try to get through the season and let that thing play out. But I think we’re in a really good place with knowing which direction we want to go with that.”
But Klein isn’t the only one Elko needs to replace now.

Kentucky is reportedly set to poach Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman.
“Kentucky is set to hire Texas A&M DC Jay Bateman. It’s a name of someone who has worked his way up on defensive staffs the past two decades, including three power-level stops since 2019 and two in the SEC since 2022 with him having spent the past two seasons with A&M,” On3Sports’ Pete Nakos reported.
It’s unclear when he plans to leave the team.
As for Klein, the new Kansas State coach is retaining his position as the Aggies offensive coordinator for the playoff run.
“I’ll be back and forth. There will be responsibilities during the day when I’m in College Station prepping for the playoff game, whichever round that we’re in that week. And then anytime there’s a break and in the evenings, coming back here and getting going on recruiting, beginning to start building a staff and building relationships with our players,” he said.
Texas A&M hosts Miami on Saturday, Dec. 20 at noon ET on ESPN.
