Coronation Street fans all said the same thing on Monday night following a special episode focused on Todd Grimshaw and Theo Silverton amid their harrowing domestic abuse storyline.

Theo joined the cobbles earlier this year as the new love interest of Todd. However, Theo’s true colours soon emerged as he began manipulating Todd, attempting to control every aspect of his life and isolate him from loved ones.

In recent scenes, the abuse has escalated to physical violence in heartbreaking scenes and Todd, who has been terrified of what his partner might do next, installed hidden cameras in their home.

On Monday night, the entire episode was shown through the point of view of cameras such as Todd’s hidden camera, CCTV, dashcam, video doorbell and police bodycams as a series of flashbacks showed what really goes on behind closed doors.

After various harrowing scenes showed Theo manipulating and abusing Todd throughout the week, the latter finally had enough and stood up to his vile partner after learning he had been secretly tracking him.

Theo’s true colours soon emerged as he began manipulating Todd

During the intense scene, Theo attempted to attack Todd as he insisted he wanted to split and for Theo to stop once and for all, demanding he leave the flat immediately.

Theo called Todd “vile” before shoving him and making him fight back to which Todd defended himself by pushing Theo out the way as he smashed into a coffee table, where he was left unconscious.

After hearing the commotion outside, some of Weatherfield’s concerned residents called the police with Todd arrested and Theo taken to hospital. Todd refused to disclose what had been going on, insisting it was just an accident, while Theo was treated as the victim in a sick twist with the police offering him domestic abuse leaflets.

Eventually, both Todd and Theo arrived home, where Theo manipulated Todd once again. However, things took a sinister turn when Theo spotted the cameras Todd had installed, saying: “Have you been filming us, have you been filming me, Todd? Is that a camera? Have you been filming us, have you?” as he put the camera in Todd’s face before the episode came to an end.

Taking to Twitter, now X, soap watchers were quick to say the same thing as one person said: “Wow what an episode that was Corrie. #corrie”, a different account put: “Tough watch but powerful episode of #Corrie today” while another commented: “Wow #Corrie what an episode! A brilliant concept. I was on the edge of my seat. Brilliant acting. Powerful. Harrowing. Heartbreaking. I need a lie down now! My heart goes out to everyone in a similar situation.”

Elsewhere, a different account commented: “Wow the episode today . Gareth pierce was incredible, Todd is breaking my heart and the perspective of showing it all through cameras was amazing, really bold and imaginative. It was a tough episode to watch but it was done with care #Corrie.”

Another wrote: “The script for tonight’s #corrie is crazy good. I was on my way to work, so I couldn’t watch some parts of it and just had to listen. It was so eerie and disturbing and powerful. Ian Kershaw is so good. What a script” while another viewer commented: “Wow todays episode was heartbreaking and powerful to watch I want to give Todd a massive hug bless him Well done to Gareth Pierce & James Cartwright #Corrie.”

Meanwhile, another soap watcher wrote: “I love it when soaps go the extra mile to get creative. Tonight’s #Corrie will not be for everyone, but given the nature of the storyline, it’s such a clever way to approach how it is told. We never know what’s going on behind closed doors”.

A different account added: “Corrie really pulled that “you never know what happens behind closed doors” so incredibly well. What a tough watch. Tonight’s ep is deffo award winning stuff! hats off to the writer Ian Kershaw & everyone else involved.”

Talking about being asked to direct this first of its kind episode, Coronation Street Director Matt Hilton revealed: “It felt like a really bold idea to show it in this intimate and voyeuristic way that I’d never seen done before and as a fan of the true crime genre I could see how it could work if we did it right, something that would be intriguing for the viewer and make them feel uncomfortable in watching it all take place.”
