Lady Colin Campbell’s extraordinary life from adopting sons to childhood trauma

Murder in Monaco: Netflix documentary teased in trailer
Murder in Monaco is available on Netflix, and the documentary delves into the peculiar circumstances surrounding the death of Edmond Safra, a Lebanese-Brazilian billionaire banker and philanthropist. In 1999, a fire at a Monte Carlo penthouse led to Safra being discovered dead, with his nurse Ted Maher later convicted of arson causing death after admitting to starting the fire.
At the time, the questionable circumstances of Safra’s death attracted worldwide media coverage. Lady Colin Campbell, commonly referred to as Lady C, makes an unexpected appearance in the documentary and was spotted in the trailer curtly dismissing a crew member who offered her a beverage.
“No, thank you. I want this over with as quickly as possible. Start,” she was heard declaring before snapping: “Actually, I’m not doing this. This is at an end. Unf******-believable,” before walking out. Lady C, recognised for her appearance on I’m A Celebrity, had written a book called Empress Bianca, a novel widely understood to be inspired by the life of Edmond Safra’s widow.
Lily Safra took legal action against Campbell’s publisher Arcadia Books, resulting in the book being withdrawn and pulped, with an amended version released subsequently. Born Georgia Arianna, Lady C is a British Jamaican writer, socialite, and TV personality famous for releasing multiple unauthorised works about the British Royal family, including Diana, Princess of Wales.
Born into the prominent Ziadie family of Lebanese descent, Lady C grew up in the Colony of Jamaica as one of four children to Michael George Ziadie, a wealthy department store owner.

Lady C was brought up as a boy
Raised as George William Ziadie due to a genital malformation at birth, her family followed the medical advice of the time despite her being female.
She suggested that had she been born five years later, it might not have been an issue due to medical advancements.
Speaking to Herald Scotland, she said: “There’s a very famous movie star who will remain nameless because I don’t believe in outing anyone. She was born with a similar condition but she was brought up as a girl. The thinking changed in the medical profession.”
Upon reaching puberty, she faced severe bullying at the boys’ school she attended and by 13, she was eager for her parents to intervene.
However, she was given male hormones, and it wasn’t until her grandmother discovered what was happening that things took a turn.
Her grandmother funded corrective surgery in New York, which she underwent at 21, and she legally changed her name from George William Ziadie to Georgia Arianna Ziadie.

Lady C is the proprietor of Castle Goring in Worthing
In 2013, Lady C acquired Castle Goring, a Grade I listed country house in Worthing, Sussex.
The property is the ancestral home of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and novelist Mary Shelley.
She has been painstakingly renovating the formerly crumbling castle, acknowledging the restoration venture would cost millions.
Speaking to The Argus, she revealed: “There have been times when I wished I could stop and there have been times when there has been too much for me to do.
“Things do go wrong and human beings, being what they are, well, some people do a wonderful job and others do not. It has been frenzied at times – there are never-ending demands, never-ending things to do, and lots of problems. But I have always enjoyed it.”

Lady C married just five days after meeting her partner
Lady C wed Lord Colin Ivar Campbell, the younger son of the eleventh Duke of Argyll, on March 23, 1974, despite knowing him for merely five days.
She was drawn to his commanding presence and appreciated how he “exuded strength, decisiveness and charm”, yet their union proved short-lived.
The pair went their separate ways after nine months following disclosures about her physical characteristics at birth. She has remained single ever since.

Lady C is mother to two adopted sons
In 1993, she welcomed two Russian boys into her family, Michael ‘Misha’ and Dimitri ‘Dima’. Speaking to The Telegraph in 2013, she described having “always been maternal”.
She said: “Russia was a country where it’s possible to adopt infants – my English social worker told me not even to waste my time trying here.
“She said ‘You’ll be a very good mother, you’re warm, loving and ruthless’. Now, it’s quite the done thing to adopt as a single mother, Angelina Jolie did it, Sandra Bullock, but when I did it I couldn’t think of anyone apart from Joan Crawford.
“But I’m never afraid to break new ground.”
