Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a flash freeze warning for parts of central and southeast Alberta, as temperatures are set to plummet Monday night.

The warning area includes large swaths of the province including Edmonton.

The warning comes after Edmonton and surrounding areas saw temperatures hit 6 C earlier today.

Environment Canada says temperatures are expected to fall rapidly.

In Edmonton the forecast says temperatures are expected to drop down to around –16 C, with snow expected to begin late Monday night. There is also a risk of freezing rain.

Environment Canada is encouraging people in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Red Deer and other affected areas to use extra caution when travelling.

“Icy surfaces will likely form quickly and could be difficult to detect. Be very careful if walking or driving,” reads the warning issued around 8 p.m.
