Marquette’s Shaka Smart after Wisconsin loss: ‘We believe in growth’
Marquette coach Shaka Smart said that “we’re not going to cancel the season” and “we believe in growth” after MU’s humbling loss to its rival.
Marquette’s 21st men’s basketball season as a member of the Big East Conference begins Wednesday, Dec. 17. For the struggling Golden Eagles, could that be something fans can look forward to?
They certainly won’t want to be looking back. At 5-6 in nonconference play, Marquette hasn’t beaten a team from a power conference — its five victories are all against mid-major opponents. Four of their six losses are to top 50-Kenpom-ranked teams, but the Golden Eagles don’t have a victory against a team ranked above 200 in the NET rankings.
Many of their upcoming Big East foes have had the same issue. Fifth-ranked UConn, which appears to be the clear favorite in the league, already has four victories against teams in the NET top 25. But the rest of the conference has three victories combined against the top 50.
Six of the 11 Big East teams are ranked below 90 in the NET rankings. That includes Marquette (5-6) and Georgetown (7-3), who both look to begin turning their season around when they square off at Fiserv Forum in the conference opener for both teams.

Marquette has 10 games left against teams ranked between 91-149 in the NET. They’ll have to win the majority of those games to have a chance at a winning record in the Big East.
The Golden Eagles have won 15 of the last 18 meetings against Georgetown. The Hoyas are 3-3 since losing center Vince Iwuchukwu to an undisclosed injury, but their backcourt of Arizona transfer K.J Lewis (15.6 points per game) and Malik Mack (14.8) can be explosive.
Entering league play, Marquette’s Chase Ross is third in the Big East in scoring (18.5). Forward Royce Parham has 29 total points over the last two games, on the road against Wisconsin and Purdue.
