First Meeting At The Met
Back in 2018, the couple first crossed paths during their appearance at the Met Gala. During this time Waithe was engaged to film executive Alana Mayo. Hence, her connection with Erivo stayed entirely platonic.
As per Cosmopolitan reports, the two formed an instant friendship due to their shared industry experiences and love for creativity. Throughout the years, they crossed paths at film festivals, premieres and award shows and often supported each other’s work.
Dating Speculations Following Waithe’s Separation
When Waithe separated from her husband in January 2020, rumours started circulating, alleging Waithe had cheated with Erivo. However, no evidence was found in support of these claims. Shortly after her separation, Waithe was spotted with Erivo at multiple events, including the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

With time Waithe and Erivo’s bond grew closer, and fans were quick to notice their closeness. In the summer of 2022, Erivo publicly came out as queer. When Erivo earned Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for her role in Wicked, Waithe was seen supporting her throughout the season. She also appeared with her at major events to show her support. Erivo will be seen in Wicked: For Good, a sequel to the 2024 film Wicked. In the film she will reprise her role as Elphaba. The sequel will premiere on November 21.
