Gale warnings, large waves on Great Lakes. See warnings, advisories

Michigan pier transforms into creepy ice scene

Thick layers of ice blanketed a pier in St Joseph as frigid temperatures impacted part of Michigan.

Lakeshore visitors and mariners will see large waves on the Great Lakes this week as high winds sweep the state.

“Expect strong winds this afternoon and tonight (Dec. 16), then strong winds, falling temperatures, and snowfall on Thursday and Thursday night (Dec. 18),” the Marquette National Weather Service said on X on Dec. 16. “The strong winds for both events night may result in power outages and lakeshore concerns. Temps also climb up above freezing.”

A gale warning is in place for most of Michigan’s shoreline through Tuesday.

Weather officials have issued a small craft advisory and gale warning for Lake Huron (including Saginaw Bay), Lake Michigan and Lake Superior until Wednesday morning, Dec. 17. Waves are expected to range up to 18 feet with 15-45 knot winds.

The largest waves, 18 feet, are forecast along Lake Superior’s shoreline, around Marquette, Grand Marais, Manitou Island and Whitefish Point.

A lakeshore flood advisory was issued for Keweenaw, Alger, Luce and southern Schoolcraft counties.

“Residents on or near the shore should take appropriate action to protect property from rising water levels,” the NWS said.

On Lake Huron, waves up to 17 feet high are expected Tuesday. High winds are forecast to pick up again on Thursday, Dec. 18, and Friday, Dec. 19.

On Lake Michigan, waves up to 11 feet are expected to last through Wednesday, Dec. 17.

“Strong winds will cause hazardous waves which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility,” said the NWS. “Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for hazardous conditions.”
