Stoinis on Kellaway & Harper, Flip on role, Jhye to return

Melbourne Stars captain Marcus Stoinis was asked about which players could break out in BBL|15, while there were updates on Jhye Richardson’s availability and Josh Philippe’s role.
Stoinis said: “Three names I’m excited to see. Campbell Kellaway, Sammy Harper and Tommy Rogers. We’ve got a nice core but I think it’s time we talk about some of those younger guys. I’m looking forward to them with Joey Clarke at the top of the order to take it on.”
When asked about Sam Harper, Stoinis offered an insight into his role. He said: “I think he’s going really well. He opened the batting in a couple of Shield games. He’s done it at the top and in the middle order for Victoria. He’s in a really good spot to take advantage of this season. We’re not completely sure where we’ll line up but I’d say it’ll be towards the top.”
Stoinis was upbeat about Campbell Kellaway’s prospects this season. He said: “I think he just needs the opportunity. It’s really hard playing all the different formats. He’s prioritized red ball cricket. He’s played for Australia A. He’s thrown about as a future Test prospect. We see him as a real player for us.”
Stoinis also spoke about bowling himself given he’s fully fit. He said: “It’s an option. At the moment, we’ve spoken about a few things and a few options.
“I lean towards letting the bowlers do it and I’ll step in when someone doesn’t want to bowl or I see an opportunity on the night. We’ll probably be starting with our proper front line quicks with Haris, TC (Curran) and Sidds. We’ve still got a few spots up for grabs.”
Sydney Sixers wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Philippe spoke about his role at no.3. He said: “I don’t mind. Happy to bat wherever. I was in at the power play again and they bowled 1 over of spin during the first 10 overs. Whether that’s a plan from them or not, I don’t know. I haven’t faced a lot of that yet. I’m happy to play whatever role is required.
“Feel like I’m striking them nicely. It’d be nice to go on with it a little bit more and get a bigger score and bat a bit deeper.”
Philippe backed in opener Babar Azam to find form. He said: “He’s a world class player. It’s challenging coming to Australia on these bouncy surfaces. A couple of games during the belt, a few more sessions, he’ll be absolutely flying. His record is outstanding. I’ve no doubt he’ll be in the runs next game.”
Perth Scorchers coach Adam Voges confirmed the return of Jhye Richardson for Friday’s game against the Brisbane Heat. Voges said: “We’re hopeful Jhye will be made available for this game. I believe he’s on a plane from Adelaide to Brisbane today and we’ll meet him over there.
“I think any time Jhye comes back into our line-up, we’re stronger for it. He’ll be a welcome addition.”
Voges also discussed their bowling options, naming off Brody Couch and Joel Paris. He said: “I thought Brody Couch on debut did a wonderful job. He took a couple of wickets and had an impact. Joel Paris delivered what we thought he would. He’s going to be an important cog within our attack.”
