Winnipeg police are advising families to discuss safety with their kids after a child reported being approached by two men wearing face masks while walking to school in the West End.

The incident is alleged to have happened around 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the 600 block of Beverley Street, according to a news release from the Winnipeg Police Service.

The release says a school-aged child reported being approached by a white van when two men wearing face masks and black clothing emerged.

According to police, the men offered the child candy and a ride, but the child refused, ran to the school and reported the incident to a staff member.

Police say the investigation is in its early stages, but they’re encouraging caregivers to discuss “strategic safety” with their children, including walking with a friend, reporting suspicious interactions and calling out if they need help.

They’re also asking anyone with information, including surveillance video, to contact the child abuse unit or Crime Stoppers.
