Saturday’s open-air markets in Cumbria cancelled due to bad weather

TOMORROW’S (Saturday, December 13) open-air markets in Carlisle, Workington, and Keswick have been cancelled due to bad weather.

Cumberland Council confirmed on social media that, with warnings of heavy rain and winds of up to 40mph, Saturday’s markets will not go ahead as planned.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across Cumbria this weekend.

A spokesperson for the Cumberland Council said: “We’re planning to hold a rescheduled Carlisle Christmas Market for Sunday, December 21, weather permitting.

“This was a tough decision, but the safety and wellbeing of our visitors, traders, and contractors is our top priority. We’re making this decision now to avoid unnecessary waste for our amazing producers and to keep everyone safe. Thank you to our traders for understanding.”

Today’s weekly Carlisle Market (Friday, December 12) is underway with 50 traders and the Salvation Army band, who are helping spread some Christmas cheer. The council is inviting the public to join in.

They added: “Looking ahead, next weekend promises a bumper festive celebration in Carlisle City Centre. On Saturday, December 20, enjoy Quirky Eclectica’s Festive Artisan Craft & Food Fair, and on Sunday, December 21, join us for the Carlisle Christmas Market. Browse unique gifts, indulge in festive treats, and support incredible local makers.”
