Iowa Football assistant LeVar Woods leaving for Michigan State

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa’s Special teams coordinator LeVar Woods has accepted a position at Michigan State.

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz announced Wood’s new position during a press conference Thursday afternoon. Woods will serve as assistant head coach and special teams coordinator with the Spartans.

“The University of Iowa gave me more than football, it gave me my life.” Woods said during the press conference.

Ferentz said Woods will coach the Hawkeyes during the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Eve against Vanderbilt.

Woods began his position at Iowa in 2017, after previously assisting with the Hawkeye special teams. He also served as the linebackers coach for three seasons and worked with the tight ends before starting his special teams coordinator role.

Woods played for the Hawkeyes from 1998 to 2000 and accumulated 165 tackles during his career, that featured 18 tackles for loss and four sacks. He played high school football at West Lyon High in Inwood, where he earned all-state honors and was the Class 2A Player of the Year his senior year.

Woods’ son, Mason, is a freshman tight end at the University of Iowa this year.
