A ‘Rogue One’ Star’s New Christmas Comedy Is an Instant Streaming Hit

This 2025 festive season has come fully equipped with an extensive line-up of yuletide movies courtesy of the world’s biggest streamers. Right now on Netflix, the U.S. streaming charts are topped by My Secret Santa, a Mrs. Doubtfire-inspired holiday flick starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Cross‘s Ryan Eggold. On Disney+, A Very Jonas Christmas Movie is helping put the boyband trio back in the spotlight ahead of the return of Camp Rock next summer. But one new festive flick has managed to fight the competition and rise to the very top of its respective streamer’s charts instantly upon arrival.

At the time of writing, director Michael Showalter‘s Oh. What. Fun. is the most-streamed movie or series on Prime Video in the U.S., outperforming the likes of the Ella Purnell-led video game adaptation Fallout, Critical Role‘s adaptation of Campaign 2 in The Mighty Nein, 2024’s big-budget festive arrival Red One, and much more. Headlined by Michelle Pfeiffer, Oh. What. Fun. features an eye-catching supporting cast, including Denis Leary, Chloë Grace Moretz, Danielle Brooks, Devery Jacobs, Havana Rose Liu, Maude Apatow, and more. Also in the cast in a rare comedic role is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones, who also starred in this year’s awards hopeful, Train Dreams. The script for the movie is based on Chandler Baker‘s short story of the same name, with a synopsis for the film reading:

“Claire Clauster (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the glue that holds her chaotic, lovable family together every holiday season. From perfectly frosted cookies to meticulously wrapped gifts, no one decks the halls quite like Claire. But this year, as her grown kids and distracted husband get swept up in their own seasonal dramas, they make one crucial mistake: they forget their mom. By the time they realize she’s missing, Claire’s already set off on a festive adventure of her own — one that doesn’t involve cooking, cleaning, or coordinating anyone else’s chaos. As her family scrambles to find her and salvage their Christmas, Claire rediscovers what the holidays mean when you’re finally free to put yourself first.”

Streaming Success Doesn’t Equal Quality

As is proven time and again, popularity on streaming isn’t reserved for acclaimed projects. In Oh. What. In Fun.’s case, this is certainly true, with its rise to the summit of Prime Video’s charts juxtaposed with a terrible critical and audience response. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has just 37% from the former and a dreadful 27% from the latter, with the site’s consensus reading, “

Stuffing a whole lot of talent into a puny stocking, Oh. What. Fun.‘s murky holiday spirit and distracting product placement too often weigh down an appealing cast.” Collider’s David Caballero dubbed the film “a classier and more prestigious version of a Hallmark holiday movie,” in his generous 6/10 review.

Oh. What. Fun. is streaming now on Prime Video.
