Editors’ Note: Ever true

On Saturday, two Brunonians were killed. Nine others were hospitalized. Although there are no words that can heal our community’s immense grief, we send endless love to the families and friends of those lost and wish the students still recovering a swift return to good health.
We are heartbroken that the two students killed on Saturday will no longer be able to take part in our community. Every time we share meals in the Ratty, study in the Rock and sit on the Main Green, we will feel the absence of our classmates taken from us this past weekend.
On Sunday morning, we watched the first snow of the semester fall as law enforcement guided students from barricaded rooms onto streets filled with police and federal agents. Buses transferred Brunonians to the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center, where students shared food, checked in with each other and reunited with their friends. In the midst of fear and uncertainty, people showed up — and continue to show up — for one another in ways that sustain a campus in shock.
We have witnessed an immense outpouring of love from our classmates that exemplifies the strength of the Brown community. We have seen students take to social media to post pictures of Brown that have reminded us of our school’s beauty: classmates congregating on the Main Green, autumn leaves scattered on our sidewalks and the sunset behind the Van Wickle Gates.
Residents of Wriston Quadrangle woke up on Sunday to the words “EVER TRUE” — a reference to Brown’s official fight song — etched into the snow that covered the quad earlier that morning.
In these difficult times, The Herald will continue reporting in an effort to keep our community informed. We will strive to remain diligent and sensitive in our coverage.
For years to come, we will carry the two Brunonians we lost this weekend as part of this school’s history. The memories of their kindness, curiosity and courage will guide us as we uphold our shared commitment to care for one another. Their lives remind us of the enduring connection that binds us together.
Ever true.
