‘Stick with us’: Star’s plea to deserting Wanderers fans

Western Sydney star Kosta Barbarouses has urged the Wanderers’ dwindling supporter base to stick by their team.

Just 4652 fans turned up at CommBank Stadium last Saturday to watch the Wanderers’ draw 0-0 with Brisbane Roar in one of the dourest games in A-League history.

It was a continuation of an ordinary season for a Wanderers side lacking creativity and spark, with Western Sydney having scored only six goals in eight games.

Things won’t get any easier on Friday night when the Alen Stajcic-coached team hosts competition heavyweights Auckland FC.

If ever the Wanderers need a boost from their fans, it’s now.

“There’s probably been a bit of frustration in that we’ve been the better team but haven’t put teams away,” Barbarouses said as be acknowledged the angst being felt by Western Sydney fans.

“Stick with us. We’re working really hard to get a run going, and hopefully see you all there (on Friday night).

“We will do everything we can to win the game. We need to be alert for 90 minutes and try to nullify those threats that they’ve got, and try to hurt then as well.”

The Steve Corica-coached Auckland is sitting second on the ladder, just a point behind leaders Sydney FC.

Corica admitted he was surprised that Wanderers had only secured nine points this season.

“They probably haven’t picked up as many points as I expected,” the former Sydney FC coach said.

“They’re a very good team. They’ve got Kosta and (Brandon) Borrello up front, their midfield is very good, they’re very mobile, they play really good football, so it’s going to be another tough game.”

The teams met earlier this season in Auckland, with Corica’s men prevailing 1-0 on October 25 thanks to a goal from Jesse Randall.

“It’s a different situation going to their ground, and we do want to win this game, and we’re going to have to work very hard to do that,” Corica said.
