First Alert Day: Wintry mix, snow, and strong winds on Sunday

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – We are issuing a First Alert Day for Sunday. Rain, a wintry mix, and accumulating snowfall will be possible Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning.
First Alert Day Sunday(KTTC)
A strong low-pressure system will move in on Sunday. Light showers and a light rain/snow mix will be possible in the morning. As the low moves east, the wintry mix should change over to snow in the afternoon and evening. Accumulating snow and slick travel could be possible Sunday afternoon and evening.
Sunday’s timeline(KTTC)
Light rain and drizzle with areas of patchy fog will be possible on Sunday morning. The light rain and drizzle could change into a wintry mix by the late morning.
Cold air will dive in from the north, quickly changing any precipitation over to snow. The latest guidance has moderate to heavy snowfall in the afternoon and early evening on Sunday. Light snow is expected after sunset through early Monday morning.
Wind gusts start to increase to 30-40 mph after 3 p.m. Blowing and drifting snow will be a concern late Sunday afternoon and evening. The visibility issues will be seen outside of the city limits on highways and interstates.
Snowfall potential(KTTC)
Long-range models are in good agreement on where the accumulating snowfall will set up. Areas in pink could see 3″+ of snow on Sunday.
Early snowfall forecast(KTTC)
Here’s my early snowfall outlook. Most areas I-90 north will see around 2-5″ of snow.
Areas south of I-90 with see lighter snowfall amounts around 1-3″.
I do expect this outlook to shift over the next 24-36 hours. Please keep a close eye on the forecast, especially if you have travel plans on Sunday.
Dense fog advisory(KTTC)
A Dense Fog Advisory will be in effect until noon on Saturday. Visibility could drop below 1 mile for many locations across SE MN and NE IA.
