Feel that rumble? Seismic event recorded in Greater Sudbury

A seismic event was felt in Greater Sudbury shortly after 8:45 p.m. tonight, but there’s no word yet on cause or severity

A seismic event was felt in Greater Sudbury at approximately 8:45 p.m. tonight.

The Government of Canada recorded a spike in activity from a seismogram located between Chelmsford and Blezard Valley.

An Android Earthquake Alerts System on Google confirmed, “There are reports of shaking in the Walden area.”

The system “uses device and sensor data from Android phones that have Google Location Accuracy turned on in areas where shaking from a nearby earthquake is detected.”

Seismograms surrounding Greater Sudbury, including those in Kapuskasing, Pukaskwa, Kirkland Lake and Kipawa, also recorded a jump at approximately the same time.

Sudbury.com will follow up on the cause, severity and scope of the seismic activity as more information is known.

The last time Sudbury.com reported on seismic activity was on June 15, after two seismic events were felt in the Garson area the previous morning, measuring 2.6 and 2.1.

In both cases, Earthquakes Canada said the events were “lightly felt in Garson and Sudbury,” and “there are no reports of damage, and none would be expected.” Given their proximity to a mine, they were suspected to have been mining related.
