Votes trickling in across central, northern Alberta

Municipal election results began trickling in around the province with many municipalities in central and northern Alberta not publicly releasing unofficial results on Monday night. 

Here are some of the results:

Red Deer & Red Deer County

While the City of Red Deer isn’t reporting results on election night, Red Deer County posted its unofficial results.

With Jim Wood stepping down as mayor after four terms and 21 years on council, the election was an important one for the county. 

As of 11 p.m., Brent Ramsay (2,163 votes) looks to be mayor-elect ahead of Christine Moore (1,421 votes) and Lonny Kennett (937). 

Councillors Lee Girard (Division 1), Kelli Ritz (Division 2), Dana Depalme (Division 3), Julie Brewster (Division 4), Carly Anna Hansen (Division 5) and Ryanna Hansen (Division 6) were all listed as unofficial winners.

Red Deer County is home to 21,000 residents across 4,000 square kilometres.

Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo

Election results will not be available Monday night but the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo reported that 10,506 people voted in this year’s municipal election.

This represents a 25.3 per cent voter turnout, out of an estimated 41,494 eligible voters.

As of 10:30 p.m., ballot counting for Ward 1 has begun, and is underway for Wards 2, 3 and 4.

Jasper

Jasper’s re-elected councillors are Wendy Hall, Ralph Melnyk and Kathleen Waxer, according to the municipality’s unofficial election results posted online just before 10 p.m.

New councillors include Danny Frechette, Kable Kongsrud and Laurie Rodger.

According to the unofficial results, Wendy Hall received the most votes out of all councillor candidates at 701.

Richard Ireland is the acclaimed mayor for the town, with no mayoral candidates running against him in the civic election.

Morinville

Simon Boersma was acclaimed in Morinville for a second term as mayor.

Maurice St. Denis and Jenn Anheliger return as councillors, while Nathan Himschoot, Lisa Parenteau, Daryn Duliba and Jayson Wood are councillor-elect, according to unofficial results.

Official results will be posted on Oct. 24.

County of Northern Lights

Familiar faces will be returning to office in the County of Northern Lights, located about 684 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

Reeve Terry Ungarian has been re-elected, as have incumbent councilors Gary These and Gloria Dechant. Four other incumbent council members were elected by acclamation.

A two-part plebiscite question asked residents if they support the county “engaging with residents, businesses and other level[s] of government to explore the potential impacts and benefits of a nuclear power plant within the county or neighbouring county.”

Results were largely in support, with 489 people voting yes, and 260 voting in opposition.

As for whether they supported a nuclear power generation facility within the county, 450 people voted no, and 338 voted yes.
