Netflix’s Biggest-Ever Hit Faces Fresh Competition on Streaming

After acquiring Roald Dahl‘s catalog some years ago, Netflix has taken a rather unexpected route. While adaptations of the author’s most major works are in different stages of development, the partnership truly got underway with a quartet of short films directed by Wes Anderson, none of which were particularly kid-friendly. That said, Anderson ended up winning an Oscar for directing The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The streamer recently released its next major Dahl adaptation, The Twits, this past week. The animated film delivered a decent showing on the streamer’s viewership charts, posing stiff competition to the holdover mega-hit KPop Demon Hunters.
According to FlixPatrol, The Twits was the third-most-watched movie on the Netflix global charts on October 20, pushing KPop Demon Hunters to the fourth position. This is a major achievement, despite the fact that KPop Demon Hunters is months old at this point. Over the course of its run, which began in June, the film emerged as a cultural sensation, eventually becoming Netflix’s most-watched original of all time. In order to do this, it beat out past hits such as Red Notice, Carry-On, and Don’t Look Up. It also braved competition from major titles such as The Old Guard 2, Happy Gilmore 2, Havoc, and more.
Produced on a reported budget of $100 million, KPop Demon Hunters was originally a theatrical title under Sony, but was released on Netflix after the streamer entered into an agreement with the studio. Some weeks ago, it was given a three-day theatrical run that resulted in $19 million in revenue, and generated interest in a new karaoke version. The streamer reserves the rights to produce spin-offs and sequels to the property, which has proven to be about as valuable as the likes of Stranger Things and Squid Game.
‘The Twits’ Received Mixed Reviews
KPop Demon Hunters holds a “certified fresh” 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but The Twists was more divisive. Directed by Phil Johnston, the movie is currently sitting at a 57% score on the aggregator website. In her review, Collider’s Luna Guthrie wrote, “This long-awaited adaptation of The Twits loses its character too much in modernity, but it is probably about as good as we could hope for.”
You can watch the movie on Netflix, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
