Strong mag. 5.9 earthquake – North Pacific Ocean, 64 km south of San Jose, Provincia de San Jose, Costa Rica, on Wednesday, Oct 22, 2025, at 03:57 am (Universal Time) –

Cloudbridge Nature Preserve (67.1 km E of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / rattling, vibrating / 15-20 s : Loud moderate shaking of the house for 20 seconds. Sounded like someone pounding on the windows. Nothing broke from what I can tell initially. | 4 users found this interesting.  

Quepos Costa Rica (6.9 km NNE of epicenter) [Map] / Strong shaking (MMI VI) / 5-10 s : In bed, whole entire thing shook and everything including the hostel was shaking. Stuff fell off shelf’s. | 3 users found this interesting.  

Tarcolas (61.8 km NW of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / both vertical and horizontal swinging / 10-15 s

Monteverde Costa Rica / Light shaking (MMI IV) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 2-5 s : The floor above me was swaying and there was a lot of noise that I’m not sure what it was. (I am on a first floor of a rustic hotel)  

Alto Boquete, Panama (218.9 km E of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / simple rolling (tilting sideways along one direction) / 30-60 s : I was in Pleasanton, CA during the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. This felt very similar. It was a swaying, rolling feeling and lasted almost a minute.  

San Salvador baru (44.3 km ESE of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 2-5 s : Strong horizontal movement with squeaking and rattling of furniture, windows and the roof structure of our house. Some birds in the trees outside were suddenly on alarm.  

San francisco de Cajon, CR (63.4 km E of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) : I was sitting on the bed and felt it moving strongly from E to W. He was walking and felt the movement /saw the interior swaying.  

Puerto Viejo (64.1 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 5-10 s : The window of the bathroom came from the wall for a little bit. The floor felt like it was moving sideways under me. The hanging lamps were moving sideways  

Atenas (62.8 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / rattling, vibrating / 5-10 s : I was standing and I felt the quake while singing. most of the family felt it. First wave lasted 5 seconds but the full shaking didn’t stop until like 9 seconds  

Limon, Costa Rica (67.3 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 30-60 s : Light shaking, more swaying side to side. Cats noticed. Lasted about a minute with a possible weak aftershock.  

Costa Rica, San Jose (68.3 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) : I was laying in bed about to go to sleep and my bed suddnely started moving quite strongly from left to right, then I got up from the bed and felt the whole building moving quite strongly.  

Platanillo Costa Rica (41 km ESE of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / rattling, vibrating / 10-15 s : I was in the bathroom and everything began rumbling then shaking, it was epic, like God moving in a WAVE through the village. Then some light shaking side to side followed. It was aparatos and confusing at first, then became a recognizable earthquake, crescendoing towards the middle of the shaking.  

Quepos (64.1 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Strong shaking (MMI VI) / both vertical and horizontal swinging / 10-15 s : Started quickley shaking About 10 to 15 seconds Got quit heavy breaking dishes House moved a lot most in 10 years  

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (157.7 km ENE of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 15-20 s : Woke up from our sleep, felt horizontal movements of the house we are in. It felt like a dream as we were just waking up, but upon googling it, we realized it was a real earthquake  

Santiago de Puriscal, Costa Rica, America Central (52.9 km E of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 10-15 s : Sitting on the terrace next to a wooded area…, the chair moved back and forth for approximately 15 seconds. Most definitely the shaking was felt while sitting.  

Home, Bahia Ballena, Uvita (51.9 km ESE of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / rattling, vibrating / 30-60 s : I was lying in bed and thought my partner was shifting around and shaking the bed. But then I heard cracking, like walls or windows shifting. Then the light jostling continued on for several more seconds.  

La fortuna, Costa rica (138.1 km NNW of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) : Laying in bed at Nayara Springs resort is how I experienced it. A lot of things shook but especially the bed posts and the chandelier  

Nuevo Arenal, Tilaran, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (154 km NNW of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / rattling, vibrating / 30-60 s : While reading in bed, felt a light shaking that progressed stronger and continued without be coming even stronger. Seemed to last 30 to 60 seconds which is longer than the lighter earthquake sensations we usually receive  

San Isidro (53.6 km E of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 10-15 s : I heard something before I felt it, it started off small and then it was big rumbles for a few seconds before stopping, small things fell off my shelf but nothing seemed damaged  

Colima, Tibás, San José (64.7 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / rattling, vibrating / 5-10 s : I was sitting on a chair when it startet vibrating. It felt like a big machine would start digging on the house. Nothing got damaged as far as I know.  

Dominicalito Puntarenaa Costa Rica (41.4 km ESE of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / rattling, vibrating / 20-30 s : I was asleep in bed and the shaking woke me up. Bed was shaking, creaking sounds, power went off for a few seconds.  

Quepos, Puntarenas Province (3.7 km NNE of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / rattling, vibrating / 10-15 s : It was scary. On the 2nd floor of a hotel in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. Came on very quickly and strong and stayed strong for 10 to 15 seconds. There was a small aftershock a minute later that was very small.  

Quesada, Alajuela, Costa Rica (62.8 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Strong shaking (MMI VI) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 5-10 s : No damage luckily, animals were alarmed, more specifically dogs, the shaking felt sideways mostly with circular style motions  

Puerto Viejo (64.1 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / 20-30 s : Initially it caused light shaking of the bed. After about 10-15 seconds of this light shaking, it increased to moderate shaking with swaying and windows rattling for about 10 seconds. Lights outside flickered for a few seconds after the earthquake subsided.  

Pavas (64.8 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 10-15 s : One quick shake, then around 7-5 seconds of weak shaking horizontally..Went outside and dogs were barking, and cable lines were swinging.  

Alto Boquete, Panama / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 20-30 s : Felt some light shaking as it built up and then the 2 story house started rocking. Loud noises from the house shaking, the windows rattling and things on flat surfaces moving but nothing fell. Lasted about 15 sec and then the building continues to shake for over one minute (liquifaction?). No damage, able to get up and walk for all but the strongest shock.  

San Jose (64.1 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 30-60 s : I was lying in bed and could feel the bed and the room shaking. The lamps were moving around both the hanging and the standing ones. Overall it lasted around a minute and felt more like lateral movements  

near San Isidro, Pérez Zeledón (34.9 km ESE of epicenter) [Map] / Strong shaking (MMI VI) / 10-15 s : Not a rolling one. It seemed like it was jolting every which way. Things fell off shelves in my house.  

Coco Beach, Panama, near Puerto Armuelles (191.8 km SE of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 1-2 minutes : It felt like a circular motion, strong at first, continuing for a minute or more after, getting lighter. It made us very dizzy.  

San Ramon (60.5 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / 20-30 s : Shook the whole house. We were lying in bed and the bee Shook for almost 30 seconds. House was creaking. Water in pool moving from side to side  

Escazu Costa Rica (63.1 km N of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / complex rolling (tilting in multiple directions) / 20-30 s : Sitting on the couch watching television, started shaking and kept getting stronger, building up and continued vibrating for awhile after the initial shaking. My son was sleeping in another room and it woke him up

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,…IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.
