Brothers Pat and Cam Spencer bring fans to their feet during Grizzlies-Warriors game – The Athletic

The game was already over. But everyone in the arena wanted to see one more bucket.
Ten seconds remained in a 13-point game as cheers of anticipation reverberated through the Chase Center, as if fans were expecting a nail-biting finish between the Memphis Grizzlies and Golden State Warriors.
Usually, when up by double-digits with a few seconds left, teams dribble out the clock as fans shuffle toward the exits. Yet they stayed. Steph Curry, already on the bench for what became a 131–118 Warriors win, was violently swinging his towel near midcourt. The Grizzlies’ bench behind the action had cleared, standing on their feet, egging on the isolation play in front of them.
Why?
Warriors guard Pat Spencer had the ball on the wing, a devilish smile across his face. Across from him was his younger brother, Grizzlies guard Cam Spencer, crouched in a defensive stance.
Both had checked into the game with a minute remaining for this very moment.
“Everyone in the arena wants Pat to shoot on Cam,” NBC Sports Bay Area play-by-play announcer Bob Fitzgerald said on the broadcast.
The Golden State court morphed into the blacktop of Davidsonville, Md., where the brothers grew up.
Pat took four dribbles into the mid-post before firing a turnaround fadeaway off one leg — the type of shot a two-way contract player would only take on that blacktop back home. His shot rimmed out as time expired.

Pat and Cam took their own unique, threading paths to that moment on the court Monday night. Cam, the younger brother, began his college career at Loyola Maryland before transferring to Rutgers and eventually Connecticut in 2023, where he started at point guard for the 2024 national championship-winning Huskies. He was a first-team All-Big East selection that season, then drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the 53rd pick in the 2024 draft and traded to the Grizzlies on draft night, where he signed a two-way contract.
Cam has played in 29 career games for Memphis, including one start, averaging 10.7 minutes and 4.6 points. He logged 14 minutes off the bench against Golden State Monday night, finishing with 11 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists.
Pat was originally drafted with the first pick in the inaugural Premier Lacrosse League College Draft in 2019 out of Loyola Maryland. He then chose to pursue a basketball career, playing one season at Northwestern from 2019 to 2020, before going undrafted and beginning his professional career in the G League in 2022 with the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s affiliate. He made his NBA debut in 2024 and has played in 47 career games, averaging 6.1 minutes and 2.3 points.
His isolation against his brother was his first and only minute of action in that game.
The next time the brothers could square off will be Feb. 9, with Golden State once again hosting Memphis.
